Week 1 Wrap-Up: Local Overloads & Short Combinations

Week 1 Wrap-Up: Local Overloads & Short Combinations

What an incredible opening week for our 6-week U16 Summer Performance Program! The energy, focus, and work ethic across the board showed exactly why these young athletes are looking to elevate their game for the upcoming fall high school and club seasons. Week 1 was all about establishing our training culture, bringing elite college exposure directly to the pitch, and kicking off the inaugural MOLIGA U16 League season.

Elite Collegiate Exposure

This week, our players had the invaluable opportunity to be coached and evaluated directly by active college coaches during our College Technical session. A huge thank you to our guest coaches for bringing their expertise and raising the standard:

  • Nenad Todorovic – Head Coach, Harris-Stowe State University

  • Nenad Curic – Head Coach, Webster University

  • Jackson Schrum – Assistant Coach, Columbia College

  • Ricardo Garza – Head Coach, STLCC

  • Austin Love – Assistant Coach, Harris-Stowe University

Week 1 Curriculum Breakdown

Our developmental focus for the week centered entirely on Local Overloads & Short Combinations. Here is how our sessions broke down:

  • Monday: College Technical (Passing & Receiving Lines)

    • High-intensity college passing patterns focusing on one-touch weight of pass.

    • Emphasizing playing the way you face.

    • Developing immediate angled support loops (Escadinhas setup).

  • Wednesday: Atlético Principles (Embracing the Relation)

    • Transitioning technical habits into live, localized environments.

    • Tight rondo variations where rigid spacing rules were intentionally broken.

    • Small-sided breakout games that require local clustering before release.

  • Friday: Summer League Match (Game 1 Evaluation)

    • Tactical Metric: Coaches observed if players clustered organically near the ball to escape tight pressure, utilizing short, sharp combination habits to establish match rhythm under league pressure.

MOLIGA U16 League: Week 1 Results

Friday night brought the heat with the opening matches of the summer league. We saw excellent application of the midweek training principles, high intensity, and fantastic competitive spirit.

  • Aguilas defeated Toros

  • Lobos defeated Leones

Player Development Note

As a reminder, every single match this summer is professionally filmed with TRACE. Film review is one of the most critical tools for player development and building highlight tapes for future college recruitment.

Next Steps for Players: Match film from Friday is being processed. Once uploaded, players should review their positioning, spatial awareness, and decision-making on the ball—specifically looking at how well you executed the short combinations and local overloads practiced on Monday and Wednesday.

Looking Ahead to Week 2

We hit the ground running, but the standard goes up from here.

  • Training Schedule: Check your team communications for exact field locations and times for our next midweek sessions.

  • Match Day 2: Schedule and opponent details for the next MOLIGA league match will be posted shortly.

Thank you to all the parents, players, and coaching staff for making opening week a massive success. Let's keep building the momentum!
