PREVIEW: CASTL battles Demize on the road

by Peyton Rives

ST. LOUIS – Club Atletico Saint Louis (1-2-1) heads to Springfield, Missouri for a showdown with Demize NPSL (1-1-2), starting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11. The game will be streamed live on

Coming off a statement 5-0 victory over Ozark FC on Saturday, CASTL has a quick turnaround as they hit the road for a three-game away stretch.

In the win over Ozark, the Bluebirds finally managed to find their offensive footing, with an onslaught of goals in both halves.

In the first half, it was Eric Lopez who kickstarted the offense with his two goals in the 3rd and 25th minute. The scoring didn’t stop though, as other players were able to get loose and open up the field. Adama Kante scored three goals in the second half, cementing the 5-0 victory and recording his first hat trick with the Bluebirds.

“This was the most complete game we played all season,” Lopez said. “The score showed that."

The 5-0 win marks the largest margin of victory for the Bluebirds since they became a team in the NPSL. Previously, they defeated Demize, 3-0, in the 2018 campaign.

With only three goals in the first three games, CASTL more than doubled their goal total and learned that they have the players to score up top. Kante now leads all CASTL scorers with three goals.

With the victory, the Bluebirds now shift their focus to Demize, currently sitting at third place in the Heartland Conference standings with five points.

Demize is led by head coach Chris Hanlon. So far this season, the team has defeated FC Wichita, recorded draws against Ozark and FC Wichita and lost to Little Rock.

Demize has scored just four times on the season, which is currently the least amount in the Heartland. Although the offense may lack some firepower, the defense has been astounding, allowing only five goals, the least in the Heartland.

Gustavo Nascimento is their leading scorer with two that he recorded against Demize’s win over FC Wichita. Marcelo Hernandez and Erik Soares have contributed one goal each in other games.

CASTL and Demize split two games last season. Early, the Bluebirds defeated Demize, 3-0. However, Demize got its revenge later in the season, as they flipped the score, defeating CASTL, 3-0. The all-time series between the teams is tied at 1-1-0.

With the first victory of the season out of the way, the Bluebirds are hungry for more. A win over Demize would likely move CASTL into third place in the Heartland. It would also give the Bluebirds a chance at securing a top seed in the playoffs later in the season.

“I think this win is a good step for us, moving forward,” Kante said. “Now, we’re just trying to go for everything, get to the playoffs and maybe win the championship. That’s the goal for our team.”
